Hilliard Farm is recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as official Backyard Wildlife Habitat No.25755, and by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife as Certified Site No. 1739 for "Backyards for Wildlife". It is located in a developed suburb which has almost run out of space for infilling new houses. The property itself is across the street from City Hall, the Police Station, and the Recreation Center and is about 1.1 acres.

One criteria for a Backyard Wildlife Habitat is water, year-round.

Another criteria for a Backyard Wildlife Habitat is cover for nesting and raising young.  Piles of dead tree branches are not permitted in my community, so I have tall grass and many shrubs.

A third criteria for a Backyard Wildlife Habitat is food, year-round.  Rather than having a bird feeder, I plant native flowers and shrubs.
